ALANYC | Newsletter | Private group tour & discussion at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum Private group tour & discussion at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum

Please join ALANYC’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee on Thursday, November 3, 2016, from 4-5:30 pm for a private group tour and discussion at the Lower East Side Tenement Museum. Guides from the museum will take us through the space and lead the conversation about the evolution of NYC’s immigrant experience through the lens of actual businesses from the 1870s through the present day.

The Shop Life tour explores the family-run stores which filled the lower level of 97 Orchard for over a century, where they struggled to adapt to an ever-changing neighborhood and achieve the American Dream. We’ll visit the recreated 1870s German saloon of John and Caroline Schneider, and use interactive technology to trace the stories of turn-of-the-century kosher butchers Israel and Goldie Lustgarten, 1930s auctioneer Max Marcus, and 1970s undergarment discounters Frances and Sidney Media.

Sign up is on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to space limitations, the maximum group size is 30. There will be a wait list in the event of cancellations.

Afterwards, those interested can continue the conversation at a multi-cultural destination for a self-pay dinner.

The museum is located at 103 Orchard Street, New York, NY 10002.
