Can you believe the summer is over and fall is upon us? Though summer may be slow for some people, our education committee was hard at work hosting excellent sessions during the summer months. No rest for the weary! The Board was also busy planning the fall programs and we’re excited to get them underway.
On July 11, 2016 we hosted a Director/C-Level Special Interest Group “Meet & Greet” at Epstein Becker & Green, moderated by Shahily Negron, Co-Chair of Educational Committee, and Molly Pease, Member Co-Chair of the SIG. This group includes a subset of ALANYC members who are in a C-level or Director-level role at their firms. Members should be the most senior administrative person, report directly to the Managing Partner, and have substantial involvement in the firm’s strategic direction and business decisions. The group is scheduled to meet every other month over lunch to discuss issues facing the highest level of law firm management. At this session we discussed what topics members are interested in learning more about. Some topics included: e-billing, health insurance, records management, collections, associate salaries, risk assessments, business development, changing landscape of the billing department, succession planning (client succession planning), relationships with Of Counsels, how to embrace change, time management, and how to be a team player. If you meet the requirements of the group, I highly recommend that you attend the next session which will be posted on the Calendar of Events.
On July 28, 2016 we held an educational session entitled “Transforming Your Firm’s Projects from Project Completion to Project Management – 9 Tips for Instituting Successful PM Practices”. Patricia Mansuy and Natalie Alesi of Kraft Kennedy, Inc. presented the session. With the evolution of the digital enterprise, law firms and legal departments need to revisit their workflows, projects and static business processes in order to streamline, analyze, speed up and provide clarity to client and executive demands and information. The challenge is to analyze what is happening in real-time with your employees, your clients, and within your practices. Static business processes are no longer effective, and firms have a commitment to extract this information to provide cost-effective solutions to clients and firm executives. Below are the 9 tips to follow:
1. The solution belongs to the users. 2. LPM is part of the ballgame. 3. Identify and map processes. 4. Start small. 5. Keep it super simple. 6. Encourage discussion but know there is no perfect answer, talk with clients. 7. Do ONE thing. 8. Find a champion.
9. Focus on the need, not the technology.
On August 17, 2016 we held an educational session entitled “Out of the Line of Fire: Preparing Your Defense Against An Active Shooter” at LDI Color ToolBox. Sarah Gillen, President of Emergency Skills, Inc. presented the session. Over the last several years there has been an alarming increase in violence at the hands of individuals armed with guns, in the workplace, schools, shopping areas, and places of worship. This session empowered us with practical steps to ensure our safety and the safety of our employees in the event of an active shooter. We learned the steps to take to prepare for, and sometimes prevent the likelihood of an active shooter event. We also learned basic first aid including hands-on CPR.
As you can see, the ALANYC Chapter is constantly providing high-level educational programs and events which I hope you will attend.
