“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” – John Quincy Adams

As your chapter president, I have set some specific goals for our board to achieve this year. Primarily, I wanted to raise the bar on education, focus on networking and making all members feel included and extending our reach into the community through community service efforts. The Board has been working tirelessly to ensure that we provide high level education sessions for you and so far, the board has lived up to the expectations. There’s more to come.

Our Induction Luncheon was held on April 6th at Morton’s Steakhouse and featured a roundtable session entitled “HR Mistakes You’ll Never Make Again” with guest speaker Laurent S. Drogin, Partner and head of the Labor and Employment Practice at Tarter, Krinsky & Drogin, LLP. At the luncheon, groups sitting at the same table were asked to discuss various scenarios and how to resolve them. Each table was also assigned a moderator to guide the discussion. When the allotted time came to an end, Mr. Drogin then explained how to respond to each scenario from the best legal standpoint. Judging from the very positive evaluation forms, the program was very well received.

Our May 3rd luncheon was held at Mastro’s Restaurant and was designated for Members only. The new board and committee chairs introduced themselves to the attendees and discussed their plans for the year. The luncheon was a town hall style meeting and members had ample opportunity to ask questions and offer suggestions.

On May 9th, we hosted a charity event at Café SFA to benefit the Coalition for the Homeless. It was a spectacular evening where ladies were treated to complimentary makeovers and gentlemen to shoe shines. We had many raffle prizes that were graciously donated by business partners and/or members and raised close to $5,000 for the Coalition. Giving back is so dear to my heart and I was delighted to be part of this event.

I recently returned from the ALA National Conference in Los Angeles. Close to 1,200 members from all over the world attended this conference which boasted excellent programs and speakers, a beautiful exhibit hall packed with business partners representing all products and services our industry requires to deliver top quality legal services and a full schedule of networking events. It was a time to see old friends and make new ones while enjoying the beautiful California weather (although it was a bit cold). The region offered many things to experience: Rodeo Drive (Pretty Woman), Santa Monica (breathtakingly beautiful) and Catalina Island (I’m moving) – just to name a few.

Once again, our chapter was awarded the President’s Award of Excellence and our very own Sharon Stewart, Immediate Past President, accepted the award on behalf of the Chapter in recognition of her outstanding year as president.  The Chapter hosted a dinner at Drago Centro with 40 members and business partner attendees. It was a fantastic evening with great food, great conversation and great people.

Our education programs have already gotten off to a great start. The June 15th session had over 50 registrations.  Nice to have positive feedback so far.

Our last social event was the summer party which took place on June 15th at Rock & Reilly’s. A great time was had by all but more importantly, 25 backpacks each filled with a long list of school supplies were collected for Operation Backpack; these vital supplies will be given directly to homeless kindergarten and pre-K children. Additional backpacks and cash donations were also received.
