Education Calendar in Review

On October 6, we all enjoyed the amazing 12th annual Educational Symposium & Exposition – Igniting The Leader in You! Read a review by a new member and an ALANYC veteran further on in this issue and check out some fun pics.


On October 25 we brought you Finance Mistakes You Will Never Make Again presented by our very own Shahily Negron-Falcon and hosted at Thompson Hine LLP. During this engaging roundtable, attendees discussed real-world scenarios and best practices for maneuvering through issues including Commingling Funds, Trust Accounting, Division of Responsibilities, Timekeeping, Retainer Agreements and Billing. We learned a great deal from each other!

Aging population at your Firm? No problem – November brought us a very informative session – Medicare 101 – For Inquiring Minds Who Want to Know. Hosted by the Diversity & Inclusion Committee at Milliken & Company on November 8, those who attended learned a great deal on supplemental health coverage, including eligibility/enrollment, cost-sharing, Part A, Part B, Medicare choices and supplements and Part D/Prescription Drug Coverage. This was an important session that drew a very engaged crowd.

On December 8, we switched gears and covered what seems to be becoming a ubiquitous workforce issue – substance abuse. Lisa Smith presented But She’s Such a Nice Girl – The Truth about Substance Abuse and Mental Health in the Legal Profession hosted at Morrison Foerster LLP.

We welcomed the New Year by welcoming a new Signature Event envisioned by Chapter President, Tanya Duprey – the ALANYC Thought Leadership Luncheon was incredibly well received. Held at the beautiful Upper Story on January 24, some very thought provoking round table discussions took place.

Chapter leadership struck a smart balance between the needs and wants of our diverse membership with this event.  Our members had the opportunity to tap into talent and experience they might not otherwise be afforded based on industry experts on a myriad of topics ranging from The Multigenerational Workforce to Eco-Consciousness to Virtual Law Firms and the Quest to Work from Home.  It was nice to see the chapter take one member’s suggestion, and initiate individual Community Forum threads with topic summaries after the event so chapter members could continue the dialogue or get info on topics they didn’t have the chance to hear about – it was so hard to choose just one table!


We didn’t let the cold weather slow us down in February with the jaw dropping and bias-shattering “Grey Area Thinking” luncheon presentation held on February 27 by transgendered attorney, Ellie Krug.

We came together to learn how to “think differently” with national speaker and inclusionist Ellen “Ellie” Krug as she conducted her highly valued human inclusivity training, Gray Area Thinking®. This training provided us an easy-to-understand toolset on how to be more welcoming of anyone who is “other” in our society.

While we’ve all heard the phrase “diversity and inclusion,” do we really know what it mean to make a workplace or even our personal lives more diverse and inclusive? How can we move beyond grouping and labeling other humans according to race, religion, or country of origin? Can we really build a just and inclusive world, especially in a time of such legitimized division? How can we make the legal profession more inclusive of those who are “other” and different from “us”? Ellie helped us think about these issues and start to change our perspectives and identify our biases.

About the speaker:

When Ellen (Ellie) Krug, a civil trial attorney in Cedar Rapids who worked on 100+ trials, transitioned from male to female in 2009, she became one of the few attorneys nationally to try jury cases in separate genders.  A hopeless idealist, Ellie has presented her inclusivity training, Gray Area Thinking®, across the country. She has trained court staff, law firms, Fortune 100 corporations, colleges and universities in diversity and inclusion.

Ellie is the author of Getting to Ellen: A Memoir about Love, Honesty and Gender Change (2013). In 2016, Advocate Magazine named Ellie one of “25 Legal Advocates Fighting for Trans Rights.” She is also a monthly columnist for Lavender Magazine and a weekly host on AM950 radio. Her monthly newsletter, The Ripple, can be found at www.elliekrug.com. Ellie presently lives in Minneapolis and is the founder and president of Human Inspiration Works, LLC.

How many of you were stunned? Impressed? Moved? – Good – mission accomplished!

We sprung into March and leapt over our 4th Nor’easter, straight into planning with the March 27 educational session, Security & You – Planning Today for Tomorrow’s Future. We heard about important information on Social Security retirement, disability benefits and enrollment in traditional Medicare, Parts A (hospital) and B (Medical).


Did someone say Employment & Labor Law Update? One of the best sources of HR education the Chapter offers each year, Dean Silverberg of Epstein, Becker & Green LLP, delivered this closing session at our annual educational symposium and as usual, he did not disappoint!

On April 10 we kicked off the new chapter year with our annual Members Only Luncheon at Morton’s Steakhouse. Incoming President, Jenniffer Brown, shared her vision for the year and learned about new Team Initiatives each Board member would be leading.  Interested in serving on a Team this new chapter year?
